The organisers are very grateful to the judges from the sponsoring firms, namely, Andy Short (Alfa Laval Pumps), Paul Cuttell (Wright Flow Technologies), Sam Cheetham and Adam Pye (HMD Seal/less Pumps) and Mark Keen (Southern Water). The judging was co-ordinated by Science and Engineering Ambassador Derek Leppard for Eastbourne EBP.

Special thanks are also due to Eastbourne Theatres and JWD Enterprises who helped with tables and St. Bedes Preparatory School (www.stbedesschool.org) who once again provided their Sports Hall as the venue.

The challenge involved teams of 4 Year 6/7 pupils from 19 Eastbourne Schools (see below). Following an introduction by Sarah Pannell and Cathy Ota from STEM Sussex, the teams took part in a short exercise to develop their teamwork and problem solving skills. The teams were then asked to agree job roles and set up a manufacturing ‘company’ with a logo and promotional poster. They then sourced materials to produce a range of products on-demand that were ‘bought’ by the judges subject to stringent quality control procedures! The teams were all very enterprising and completed the challenge with great enthusiasm.

Whilst the pupils were busy, their teachers participated in a challenge of their own, organised by Janet Czajkowska from Science and Technology Plus. They had to create a ‘machine’ that could manufacture a product using K-Nex construction components with some novel results!

The Worshipful The Mayor, Cllr Carolyn Heaps kindly attended the event to assist with final judging and present certificates and prizes to the winners.

The next Young Engineers event will take place on 27th January 2012. In the meantime, Eastbourne EBP looks forward to the second Junior Engineers event for Year 2 pupils at the end of June, Airbourne In-Bloom in March and Young Chef in July.
